Their presentation, titled “Keeping People & their Pets Together,” dives into their research about fostering programs for owned pets as part of the Arizona State University/Virginia Tech Maddie’s Nationwide Fostering Study. As people across the country continue to experience challenges to housing access, temporary care programs for owned pets are needed now more than ever to keep families together. One type of program, Safety Net Fostering, involves the fostering of owned pets, facilitated by the animal shelter, when owners temporarily cannot care for them. This presentation will dive into specifics about the programmatic training and support provided to shelters, the data collected, the findings around owner reunification, and insights about how shelters can develop evidence-informed Safety Net Fostering programs to best support people and pets in their communities.
